When Texas Marine staff decided that they needed a little fishing retreat, they knew right where to go! So, last month the team packed up and headed over to Lake Calcasieu to enjoy a few days of fishing together. A good customer, Captain Anthony Busceme, had told them about the fisherman’s paradise that awaited anglers at Hackberry, ever since he bought his 2008 NauticStar 2400 at Texas Marine . His business the “Blackdog Fishing & Guide Service” is an extremely successful operation. Captain Busceme is now in such demand that he has to have a team of Coast Guard licensed Captains to handle the overage. The Captains are all exceptional when it comes to their expertise of the Calcasieu Lake area’s recreational fishing. Lake Calcasieu has the largest speckled trout population on the Louisiana Gulf Coast.
This area has been a popular fishing destination in S.E Texas and S.W. Louisiana for decades. The Texas Marine team headed out on the guided trip at daybreak to fish the 80 square miles of saltwater heaven. The lake is also known to locals as “Big Lake,” but in all reality it is a humongous estuary. There is so much marsh and backwater that anglers can get lost in there, which is why many choose the guided route. There are areas of the Lake you can actually fish salt and freshwater for an extremely rare opportunity. This massive body of saltwater in flows through such a small bottlenecked shipping channel that its unprecedented, anywhere else in America. Calcasieu Lake’s inhabitants include such species as Speckled Trout, Flounder and Reds, the Big 3 as they are affectionately called here. The Redfish in this area are famous for their fight. The group scored the day they went out. They managed to catch 300 Speckled Trout with 100 of them being keepers.
The trip included all their bait, rods and a highly unusual fish cleaning service. The Blackdog team has a way of filleting fish that most anglers have never seen before. It was intriguing to say the least. Texas Marine will be doing a blog on this in the future, so stay tuned. Artful anecdote’s, expert advice and fishing tutelage is only part of the trips many highlights that the team was able to enjoy on their retreat.
