Breaking News: Gulf Coast Red Snapper Management

H.R. 3094 the “Gulf Coast Red Snapper Management Authority Act,” just left the House Natural Resource Committee with bi-partisan support. It is a bill to transfer management of Red Snapper, in the Gulf of Mexico, from the Feds to the appropriate States. It still needs the full approval of the House and Senate, along with the President’s signature to be become law, it wouldn’t hurt to call your Congressman and the President.

“Once it becomes law, the mechanism in the bill for the transfer of management authority is very simple: Once a States agree on their management plan, then the responsibility moves to that States,” the President of CCC (Center for Coastal Conservation) said to news organizations in June. The CCC is just one of many groups who have worked tirelessly to change the way Red Snapper is regulated for the recreational anglers. The Red Snapper season this year was only 9 days, causing these anglers to see red.

The House has really stepped up to the plate when it comes to challenging fisheries issues, the last couple of years. They passed a fix to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Act, which had grouped commercial and recreational fishing into one big pot, regulating everyone the same. The President of Congressional Sportsmen’s foundation said “The Feds model is clearly not working, and it’s time for a more balanced approach to the management of fisheries.” Red Snapper Inside

Remember the ole cliché’ “The government that governs best is the one closest to the people?” Well, the same could be said for fish management. The reason the Feds are having problems is because their data collection methods are not able to measure recreational angler’s harvest accurately. All of the Gulf States have been measuring this on their own quite effectively. The states management process will be combined with their already existing data collection procedures, for the red snapper population itself. This will put the states in the perfect position to assume all new management responsibilities from the Feds.

This new method of management should allow recreational anglers to have well over the current 9 day fishing season. They will have access to one of the most thriving Gulf of Mexico red snapper populations, in decades. Texas and Louisiana red snapper anglers deserve much more than the current system by the Feds is providing for them and states are the best way to make that happen. They have proven themselves in this area time and time again, providing the populations sustainability while giving anglers plenty of reasonable fishing opportunities. If this all sounds like something you would like you may want to call you Congressman and the President to pass and sign the bill into law.

In Texas, alone, there are hundreds of massive lakes, reservoirs, bays, ocean inlets and rivers to launch at. In Louisiana, the Salt Water launch opportunities off I-10 (East or West) are endless. If you love Saltwater fishing and you are heading down I-10 take a trip over to Galveston Bay and launch at anyone of the dozens of marinas or public use boat ramps that string their way along the coastline right off the I-10 corridor between Orange and Houston.

Here is a map of the lakes you have access to in Texas alone-Click Here

Here is a map to the beach accesses along part of the I-10 coastline you have access to: http://txcoasts.com

Don’t forget to bring the fishing and skiing equipment also. At most marinas they also have equipment rental available, so don’t let a forgotten ski get in your way. Head on out into the great unknown this summer but don’t forget your boat when you leave. It will be well worth the extra trouble.

“COOKED” by Michael Pollan

“COOKED” by Michael Pollan

This entertaining book explores the enduring power of fire, water, air and earth to transform the bounty nature has to offer into some of the most delicious things to eat and drink you have ever experienced. There is plenty of wild game cooking going on in this one. The book teaches one how to grill with fire, cook with liquid, bake bread and ferment cheese, along with many other things. The author opines that the cook holds a very special place in our society firmly wedged between the culture and nature. Therefore, they cannot help but to influence both realms.

This book takes you write up alongside the author to learn his lessons. The reader is immersed into a world of practical investigation on how cooking thrusts us into a myriad of social and ecological relationships with plants and animals, soils, farming, history, culture and the people who delight in our nourishing meals.  Cooking connects us to others.

Therefore, the effects of not cooking lead us in the opposite direction, disconnected. If I rely upon corporations to make my food then they will feed me large amounts of fat, sugar, salt and disrupt essential links to the natural world. In essence it weakens my relationship to friends and family. This book actually has the audacity to argue that “to take back control of cooking may be the single most important step anyone can take to help make the American food system healthier and more sustainable.” The book’s main message to the reader is that cooking is enjoying and promotes self-reliance. As one learns to perform the culinary art of everyday cooking it will transform you and open the door to a more nourishing life.

Boys Haven-The Legacy Lives On!

Boys’ Haven – The Legacy Lives On!

Boys’ Haven was founded in 1945 with help from the Optimist Club. They have recently celebrated their 70th anniversary! They are very much looking forward to another 70 more years and truly have dedicated to the cause of helping boys who have been abandoned, abused and neglected. They have helped over 3,500 boys throughout the years, from ages 5 to 17. These boys find themselves in great need of guidance, safety, structure and stability, which unfortunately in most cases are not being received in a traditional home setting.

However, these days, Boys’ Haven is doing more than just giving the boys a home and putting a roof over their heads. Boys’ Haven seeks to provide hope for a bright future by teaching them new productive skills which will lead to successful adulthood. Boys’ Haven is proud to announce they have recently kicked off their Continuing Our Legacy Capital Campaign and are preparingBoys haven 1 to build three new cottages. Their Capital Campaign Committee has set a goal in excess of $1.5 million in order to construct these new cottages. They have been needed for a long time and will better allow them to serve the boys in our community and surrounding areas. Boys’ Haven is scheduled to break ground on their very first cottage in 2016. Each new cottage will have the capacity to house 12 boys, each of them having their very own room. This is something the boys have never had access to in the past and it is vital to building their self-esteem. Our current cottages, constructed in 1973, have reached their usefulness due to their age and ever changing state requirements. In order to continue making such a big difference in the lives of these boys, it is vital for this Capital Campaign to be nothing short of a success.

Boys Haven 4Boys’ Haven is based on the principles of discipline and hard work. We have continued our mission for 70 years now, to provide help, hope and a home for all young men in Southeast Texas that need one. We are a true dedication to a good cause.

If you would like to help or contribute, or have questions, please contact Denise Berry at Boys’ Haven at 409.790.1267 or 409.866.2400 Extension 124.
